Course Description:

The Professional Liability Program provides malpractice protection and risk management advice to Ontario dentists.  In this presentation, PLP staff will provide information about PLP and the services it provides, describes the law of dental negligence, and offer guidance on how to avoid common errors leading to claims for malpractice.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Understand the objectives and features of the dental malpractice protection provided by PLP.
  • Describe the elements of dental negligence.
  • Identify situations that may lead to legal actions against dentists.


Dr. Hong received his DDS from the University of Toronto with honours in 1983.  After graduation, he worked in public health, and started a general practice in Toronto.  He also worked at Sunnybrook Hospital as a Staff Dentist for over 30 years. He continues in clinical practice, and teaches dental students at U of T.

Dr. Hong began working for the College on a part-time basis in 2001 as a Monitoring Officer in PCRA, and joined PLP as the Senior Dental Consultant in 2016.



Senior Professional Liability Advisor

Sonia Gregoris obtained her honours bachelor of arts degree in language arts from the University of Toronto in 1982. She worked in the insurance industry as a multiple lines adjuster specializing in bodily injury and continued her education with the Insurance Institute of Ontario. She has since obtained a certificate in alternate dispute resolution from the University of Windsor Law School. She is a senior professional liability advisor and has been with the Professional Liability Program since 1993.


Lauren Morrison graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2006. She worked in private practice for over 10 years and now works as Legal Advisor with the Professional Liability Program of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario.
