New Strategies and Protocols for Caries Prevention in the Dry Mouth Patient

Course Description

This talk will cover treatment strategies that can be used to make the dental lives of dry mouth patients
easier. New dental products available for caries and dental erosion prevention in the high risk population will be discussed. Caries and erosion lesions in this population are often difficult to control because of increased bacterial load and decreased remineralisation capability. Effectiveness of certain dental products can be maximized when used in combination. A protocol for the use of combinations of these products will be presented to achieve maximize efficacy and decrease product interaction. Causes of dry mouth and some of the soft tissue lesions which also require management in the dry mouth will also be reviewed and definitive prosthodontic options will be discussed.


Course Objectives:
1) Learn to recognize dry mouth patients
2) Understand rational for treatment
3) Obtain definitive treatment knowledge of chemotherapeutic (topical) options that can be used
4) Prosthetic options for restorations
5) Soft tissue palliative care in the dry environment.

Dr. Izchak Barzilay received his DDS from the University of Toronto in 1983, a Certificate in Prosthodontics from the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, NY in 1986, and a MS from the University of Rochester in 1991.  He is currently Head of the Division of Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry, Mt. Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Ont.; Adjunct Professor, Division of Prosthodontics of the Eastman Department of Dentistry, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY; Professor, George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology, Toronto, ON; Associate in Dentistry, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ont.; Chief Examiner in Prosthodontics – Royal College of Dentists of Canada;  Past - President of the Association of Prosthodontists of Canada: Past President - Ontario Study Club for Osseointegration.; Advisory Board - International Society for Digital Dentistry; Medical Advisory Board Member – Sjogren’s Society of Canada; Publication reviewer for Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry,  and is in private practice limited to prosthodontics and implant dentistry in Toronto, Ont.  He has published on various topics including immediate implants, bonding plastics to various metals and other material and implant related topics. Dr. Barzilay hold many fellowships in prestigious organizations and has been awarded multiple awards for his research and teaching accomplishments.

Dr. Grushka graduated from Dentristry at the Univsersity of Toronto and completed her Ph.D. studies in Dentistry at the same university in 1986. During her Ph. D. studies, she also taught in the Oral Diagnosis, Oral Medicine and Temporomandibular Joint Clinics. During this period, she worked as a Research Fellow at the Toronto General Hospital, "Mouth Clinic", a clinic designed for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with orofacial pain and oral lesions. In 1986, she qualified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine; in 1988, she completed a two year Post-Doctoral fellowship in the area of facial pain. In 1996, Dr. Grushka graduated from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education with an M. Ed. in Counseling Psychology. In 1997, She became a certified Specialist in Oral Medicne in the Province of British Columbia and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain. Dr. Grushka has lectured widely throughout Canada and the United States in the field of Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain and has contributed to the scientific literature through both journal articles and book chapters, having authored more than 30 peer-reviewed articles. Since 1998, Dr. Grushka has limited her practice to Oral Medicine in both private and in a hospital based practice. She ran an "Oral Medicine Clinic" at Etobicoke General Hospital between 1988 and 1993 and also served as Chief of Dentistry at EGH from 1990 to 1991.
