Internationally trained dentists who plan to take the DDS equivalency program offered by NDEB are expected to meet Canadian DDS standards. This is an intense and rigorous examination process. Prosthodontic Associates Center for Excellence (PACE) is offering a Prep Course for International Dentists which will upgrade the knowledge and skill levels needed to be successful in the examination process. The 8 day program (Mar 2011) involves presentations and hands-on training designed to meet the requirements of the Assessment of Clinical Skills and Clinical Judgment component of the NDEB exam. This course is specifically designed for foreign trained dentists who want to upgrade their knowledge and clinical skills to meet the current Canadian standards. Subject matter will include restorative dentistry, fixed prosthodontics, endodontics, pharmacology, periodontology, evidence based dentistry, treatment planning, radiographic interpretation, infection control and quality assurance. PACE is committed to the ongoing education of dentists, dental technologists, restorative dental hygienists as well as auxiliary staff. Our faculty members are globally recognized educators at the undergraduate, graduate and research levels and are either present or past faculty members at the University Of Toronto Faculty Of Dentistry with years of experience in training general dentists and specialists.
Dr. Izchak Barzilay received his DDS from the University of Toronto in 1983, a Certificate in Prosthodontics from the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, NY in 1986, and a MS from the University of Rochester in 1991. He is currently Head of the Division of Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry, Mt. Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Ont.; Adjunct Professor, Division of Prosthodontics of the Eastman Department of Dentistry, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY; Professor, George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology, Toronto, ON; Associate in Dentistry, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ont.; Chief Examiner in Prosthodontics – Royal College of Dentists of Canada; Past - President of the Association of Prosthodontists of Canada: Past President - Ontario Study Club for Osseointegration.; Advisory Board - International Society for Digital Dentistry; Medical Advisory Board Member – Sjogren’s Society of Canada; Publication reviewer for Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, and is in private practice limited to prosthodontics and implant dentistry in Toronto, Ont. He has published on various topics including immediate implants, bonding plastics to various metals and other material and implant related topics. Dr. Barzilay hold many fellowships in prestigious organizations and has been awarded multiple awards for his research and teaching accomplishments.
Dr. Vinay Bhide is a board certified Periodontist who provides the full scope of surgical periodontal and dental implant therapy. In addition to the conventional periodontal procedures such as pocket reduction and crown lengthening, Dr. Bhide has a special interest in esthetic and reconstructive periodontics; procedures involved include soft tissue grafting for correction of gingival recession, periodontal regeneration, and pre-prosthetic site development including alveolar ridge augmentation, maxillary sinus floor augmentation (both direct and indirect), and guided bone regeneration (GBR). Dr. Bhide earned his DDS from the University of Toronto in 2001, and subsequently completed a one-year internship at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. He completed his Master of Science and specialty training in Periodontology at the University of Toronto in 2005. Dr. Bhide is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. Bhide is also a member of the International Team for Implantology (ITI). Dr. Bhide has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals. Lastly, Dr. Bhide is also involved in didactic and clinical teaching of periodontics at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels and has lectured nationally and internationally on various topics related to Periodontology.
Dr. Haas is a certified specialist in endodontics and is extensively involved in continuing education to general dentists and specialists. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and is on staff at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry and the Hospital for Sick Children. He maintains a full time private practice limited to endodontics in Toronto. Dr. Haas is a regular contributor to dental magazines and blogs and has no disclosures to make.
Dr. Petrikowski graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Alberta in 1985. After completing a one-year dental internship at the University of Alberta Hospital, she entered the Oral Radiology graduate program at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. She completed her Diploma in Oral Radiology in 1988 and commenced a faculty teaching position at the University of Alberta. She completed a Master of Science degree in 1991 through the Department of Applied Sciences in Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta. Dr. Petrikowski remained in Alberta until 1996, when she was offered a teaching position as an Associate Professor with tenure in the Discipline of Oral Radiology at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. Dr. Petrikowski’s activities included teaching undergraduate and graduate students, as well as research and private practice. Dr. Petrikowski has published a number of peer-reviewed scientific articles in oral and maxillofacial radiology and has contributed chapters to several radiology textbooks. She has lectured locally, nationally and internationally on a variety of oral radiology topics. Dr. Petrikowski remained at the University of Toronto until 2006, at which time she entered full-time private practice.
Dr. Petrikowski is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC) and is an examiner in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology for the RCDC. She is also a member of the Radiological Society of North America, American Society of Head and Neck Radiology, American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Canadian Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, International Association of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology and the Ontario Dental Association. She was also elected as Honorary Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy for outstanding service to the dental profession.
Aside from her work in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Dr. Petrikowski is a harpist and an accomplished pianist. She keeps a harp in her private office and has been known to occasionally play for staff and patients.
