Treating the Severely Atrophic Maxilla: A Graft-less Approach to Utilizing the Zygomatic Implant

User Ratings -

Course Description

Historically, treating the severely atrophic maxilla consisted of the surgeon attempting to restore the lost bone and soft tissue anatomy with significant grafting techniques prior to dental implant placements.  This greatly increased the surgical morbidity and caused significant protracted treatment time plus inconvenient and distasteful use of a provisional prosthesis during healing.  The utilization of osseous anchorage in the facial skeleton beyond the alveolus was first prescribed by P.I. Branemark for patients who had undergone ablative surgery for oral cancers and the Zygoma as a source for implant support of a prosthesis was an obvious choice.

The protocol for Zygomatic implant placement and immediate load prosthetic rehabilitation has been greatly refined in recent years.  This represents a more simplified approach to treating these challenging patients involving less trauma, less time and ultimately lost cost both financially and psychologically.

Objectives:

1. Understanding the treatment planning relative to patient selection

2. Understand the indications and limitations of the Zygomatic implant

3.  Gain knowledge of the surgical technique and prosthetic procedures to provide an immediate load fixed solution
