What You Don’t Know Can Really Hurt You: What Every Dentist Should Know About Employment Law

User Ratings -

Course Description

3 CE Credits

This session covers the essential things every employer dentist should know about employment law in Canada. This seminar will guide you step-by-step through your rights and obligations regarding your employees. The last few years have seen a veritable explosion in litigation against employers, with skyrocketing damage awards. This course will help you to learn important strategies to minimize the likelihood that you will be sued by one of your staff, and your costs if you are.

Course Objectives

  • Learn how the concept of "constructive dismissal" allows an employee to quit yet be deemed by law to have been fired by you.
  • Learn how we vindicated a falsely accused dentist and what the important implications are for your practice.
  • Understand why you should not delete texts with your staff.
  • Understand what legal concepts make being a Canadian employer frightfully expensive and how to reduce your exposure dramatically.
  • Learn to see your practice through a buyer's eyes and what scares them off about your staff.
  • Identify and implement simple HR-law steps at every stage of your career to maximize the value and sale price of your practice.

B.A.(Hons), J.D.

Mariana Bracic began her legal career in 1994 at a prominent Bay Street law firm advising clients on employment law issues. Six years later, she became Advisory Counsel with the Law Society of Upper Canada, the regulator of all the lawyers in the province. As Advisory Counsel, she was responsible for ensuring the highest standards for Ontario lawyers in ethics and competence.

In 2003, Ms. Bracic opened MBC Legal, which grew to become Canada’s HR law firm for doctors. Following enormous client demand, Ms. Bracic launched MBC Brokerage in 2016 to assist doctors with all their appraisal and practice sale needs.

Ms. Bracic’s extra-curricular interests include a commitment to early childhood literacy. She taught her twins to read by the time they were twelve months old and they have been featured on the front page of the National Post, on City TV, CBC Radio and other media. Ms. Bracic is writing a book on how to teach babies to read. In her spare time, she also enjoys running, having recently completed the Toronto Marathon.

She may be reached by telephone at 905-825-2268 or by email at and she would love to hear from you.
